The Book Guru Girl
Just another WordPress siteThe Fine Art of Acquiring Useless Stuff
Posted on May 02, 2012I’ve somehow acquired the bad habit of attending fairs, sales events, open houses, fundraisers and other typical community affairs for the specific purposes of making off with treasure. It seems that freely available at every stand can be found a fine selection of colorful pens, cheap candy, monogrammed notepads, magnets with logos on them, water bottles, keychains, and small plastic animals. Who among us does not have a love of small plastic animals?
Many a time I’ve traveled to such an affair and returned with a baggie full of things I’ll probably never use again. A duck-shaped pen to add to my collection of duck-shaped pens, a clever magnet to stack on top of all my other clever magnets, a bottle of water to put away in hopes of drinking it at some point and then re-using the bottle to make, perhaps, an air-compressor-controlled plastic submarine (this never happens, of course: the bottle will inevitably find its way into the back seat of my car and proceed to roll about underneath one of the seats until someone finds it six months later, opens it, takes a sip, and then complains about the staleness and warmness of the plastic-infused substance sloshing about inside). I can’t help it. Piles of writing implements and neatly-wrapped sugary petroleum byproducts call to me with tiny pleading voices, and I can’t deny them sanctuary. “Freeeeee,” they say, just below the auditory range of everyone else in sight, “Freeeeee….”
And so I break down, dash up to the table, and add another mass-produced cheap product to my ever-growing collection of mostly-useless free stuff.
Okay, I will admit that the pens can be useful. Most of the pens I own were not, in fact, ever acquired through more legitimate means than swiping them from a charity table or picking them up off the floor. Same for most of my refrigerator magnets (I mean, who actually buys those?). All the same, as much as I love small plastic animals, they’re starting to become a walking hazard. Have you ever stepped on a thumb-sized rhinoceros while attempting to stumble downstairs at five in the morning?
I Love Learning New Magic Tricks
Posted on September 27, 2011I have been to a number of magic shows and have asked a number of magicians if it would be possible to be their apprentice. I found out that it is very hard to find that kind of position. Ever since then, I have been a lot about the illusionary tricks in the many kinds of magic tricks that are displayed to the audiences worldwide. I just think that it is very nice to be able to learn these kinds of secrets. I know that my cousin is a beginning level magic learner, and he has been able to learn a decent amount of magic tricks. I love learning all of these tricks, as well. I learned a many different amounts of these tricks by watching instructional videos and reading articles of the matter. I really think that this has to be one of the best ways to entertain a number of people.
SOS!
Posted on January 05, 2011In my last post I mentioned that I am 4.5 months pregnant and I have gone from reading 3 books on average a week to 1 a month….it sad….its depressing…its got to STOP! Ironically my pregnancy coincided with me getting a second job so I have much less free time to read however part of the problem is I just can’t seem to get…hooked by any new authors or novels. I started Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare over a month ago and while its an excellent story I am not devouring it as I had hoped. I have a stack of books I still need to review but I am looking for that something special to get me back into the reading groove. So that’s hopefully where my readers come in! If you have read something that enthralled you and that you couldn’t put down for even a moment please let me know! My trips to Chapters haven’t revealed anything but maybe my readers will!

Mob Rules by Cameron Haley
Like most mob bosses in L.A., he’s a powerful sorcerer, battling for control of the city, gathering up the magic of violent and powerful emotions and storing it for his own use. Back in the day, Rashan saved me from the streets and made me his lieutenant. You could say I’m his go-to girl.
When a fellow gangster is ritually executed, I have to find out which of Rashan’s enemies was behind it—and why. The cryptic messages I’m getting from the Beyond tell me it wasn’t a simple hit.
With the bodies piling up, I need to win an occult gang war, take out the supernatural traitor within our outfit and, oh yeah, deal with the mixed messages I’m getting from the boss’s son….

BIG List Update
Posted on August 16, 2010I have been in the process of updating my BIG Lists and moving them from a text list to a series of pictures that link to amazon where you can read more details. It is connected to my amazon associates account but I am in no way trying to make a profit of my readers. I use the Amazon Associates blog tool that allows me to search for a novel on the same page that I am creating a post which makes things much faster and easier for me. If you choose to buy a book from my Amazon Associates account it is my intention to use that money to run giveaways on my blog.
Lastly for some reason the book pictures do not always show when loading a BIG List page. I am not sure why this is. I hope it fixes itself however the links are still active. If it doesn’t fix itself soon I will have to find an alternate way of displaying pictures for the lists.
As always feel free to email me with any book or category suggestions!
